Wild Privet Hedge Plants Description

Discover the natural charm of Wild Privet (Ligustrum vulgare), a versatile native hedging choice that brings a touch of nature to any garden setting. Ideal for mixed native hedges, Wild Privet offers semi-evergreen coverage that becomes particularly valuable in winter, unlike the more popular Common and Japanese Privet varieties, which are preferred in suburban areas.

Ligustrum vulgare is cherished not only for its dense, leafy appearance but also for its creamy white flowers that bloom in spring. While smaller than those of other Privet varieties, these flowers are a hit with local wildlife, attracting an array of butterflies and birds who come to feast on the nectar. This feature makes Wild Privet an excellent privacy hedge and a wildlife haven, but remember that its leaves and flowers are harmful if eaten.

Wild Privet is suitable for all soil types except particularly wet sites, making it a hardy choice for any gardener.

Available in various forms, Wild Privet can be purchased as cell-grown or pot-grown all year round. Bare root options are available from November to April, and root ball plants are available from mid-October to mid-April.* It's important to note that Wild Privet hedges can defoliate when replanted, particularly with bare roots, though they will recover come spring.

Head over to our root types guide, or guide to planting hedges for more advice.

*Bare-root and root-ball stock are subject to availability and may change, but are generally available from autumn through to spring.

What are root types?

Root types explained.

  • Bare root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
