Description

Weigela is a flowering deciduous shrub that is popular for its masses of vibrant pink flowers that bloom in spring, lasting into the summer months, as well as its striking cream and mid-green foliage. It's a highly prolific flowerer, making Weigela a truly show-stopping garden plant.

Weigela is a relatively slow-growing plant, with a growth rate of around 20cm - 40cm per year, and works well as a border shrub, offering year-round interest and attracting bumblebees and butterflies when its flowers are in blossom.

Loved by novice gardeners and busy people alike, Weigela is incredibly low-maintenance as it is easy to grow and maintain. It grows well in all soil types, although it should be well-drained and fertile. Although it thrives in the sun, Weigela can also tolerate partial shade, and being hardy will grow in both exposed or sheltered locations.

Pruning Advice

The best time to trim Weigela florida 'Variegata’ is after flowering.  Simply cut back the stems to where there is a healthy bud. You can cut the stems back to around a third of their growth if required. Additionally, each year, you should also completely cut back around a fifth of older stems down to ground level. By doing this you are undertaking an ongoing rejuvenation of the plant which will ensure that you have new, productive and healthy growth each season as Weigela looks its best on younger stems.

Keep an eye out for and cut away any weak offshoots that look as though they are not likely to bud, to concentrate the growth into stronger stems. Also, remove any dead, diseased or crossing branches that may inhibit growth or cause damage to the main stem.
