Cotoneaster horizontalis Hedge Plants Description
Cotoneaster horizontalis is deciduous but it is in the winter that it is most remarkable. It has a herringbone pattern of stems which form a basketweave structure, dripping with berries on its dark wood. In spring, its tiny, neat leaves don't obscure the structure, and it develops nectar laden white/pink tinged flowers, followed in autumn by red berries. In November, its leaves go bright pink/red. For evergreen Cotoneaster varieties, see Cotoneaster franchetii, Cotoneaster simonsii or Cotoneaster lacteus.
See also our Cotoneaster Hedging Guide for more information.
It is very good in shade though its flowers and berries will be more prolific if grown in a sunny spot. See our full collection of flowering hedge plants. Cotoneaster horizontalis is an extremely tough plant and will grow anywhere other than extremely waterlogged soil. It can be cut back at any time with care to maintain its herringbone structure.
Prices shown are the price per plant. Recommended planting densities are shown but this is very much a matter of choice and you can increase or reduce the density depending on your level of patience and budget. See also our Advice section on Planting Density on the right hand side of our website.
