Tree ferns prefer dappled shade in a sheltered location away from strong winds but will tolerate more full shade or some sun. They grow best in humus-rich, well-drained soil and need regular watering particularly at the crown and over the trunk as it loves humidity. Dicksonia antarctica is hardy down to around -5 when fully protected and although classed as evergreen, it can be deciduous in cooler areas.

Dicksonia antarctica is very slow growing - only about 3-5cm a year so will take many years to grow to its full height of 4m.
