Description
Bring a touch of prehistoric elegance to your garden with Dicksonia antarctica, the majestic soft tree fern, also called Australian Tree Fern. Featuring lush, arching fronds and a thick, textured trunk, this slow-growing iconic plant creates instant tropical ambiance. Equally at home in a shady woodland, or a sheltered courtyard, this striking plant certainly doens't blend into the background.
The lush green fronds can eventually reach up to 3m long forming a unique canopy and keeping the area below nice and cool, whereas the textured fibrous trunk, actually part of the root mass, acts as a water reservoir to keep the plant hydrated. Dicksonia antarctica is also wildlife-friendly, providing a temperate and sheltered environment for beneficial insects.
Tree ferns prefer dappled shade in a sheltered location away from strong winds but will tolerate more full shade or some sun. They grow best in humus-rich, well-drained soil and need regular watering particularly at the crown and over the trunk as it loves humidity. Dicksonia antarctica is hardy down to around -5 when fully protected and although classed as evergreen, it can be deciduous in cooler areas.
Dicksonia antarctica is very slow growing - only about 3-5cm a year so will take many years to grow to its full height of 4m. For this reason it's ideal to keep as a pot grown plant and is a superb statement plant for any patio or garden. With this stunning ancient tree fern you really can create your own green paradise, adding dramatic structure and timeless beauty to any space.
