White Rosa rugosa Hedge Plants Description
Rosa rugosa 'Alba' will add colour and wildlife interest into a mixed hedge, or for its prickly deterrent quality. It has richly scented, large open single flowers from June to September, followed by the largest hip of any wild rose - as large as a cherry tomato! For an alternative with pink flowers, try Rosa rugosa 'Rubra'.
The leaves are lush, glossy, dark green and crinkly (technical term is rugose) and downy underneath. The plant grows very densely with new growth coming from below ground level but true to the parent.
It has to be said that Rosa rugosa has a shaggy unkempt air though it can be trimmed to a degree of tidiness. It's carefree too in its soil and situation preferences - it's picky only about drainage - so as long as it doesn't sit in waterlogged soil, it will grow in any situation with particular preferences for some sun and sandy soils. It is good for coastal positions and is sometimes called the Saltspray Rose. One final bonus - rabbits dont like it!

Cell grown plants are available all year round. Bare roots are only available from November to mid/late May, using cold stored plants towards the very end of the season.
