London Plane Roof Form Tree Information
What is a Roof Form Tree?
The term 'roof form' refers to trees that are trained into a clear stem, with a canopy of dense foliage at the crown formed by training branches over a horizontal cane framework of equal width all round. The stems are tall, usually between 2m and 2.5m in height. Roof form trees, also referred to as Parasol or Umbrella trees are ideal for creating natural shaded areas over seating, over terraces or along pathways and are popular in both form and function, offering an attractive, living sun-shade alternative to man-made screening and shade options.
Species Information
London Plane (Platanus acerifolia) roof form trees are a popular deciduous tree similar to a Sycamore, thought to be a hybrid of the American and Oriental Plane. They are most noted for their large, thickly textured, five-lobed pointed leaves not unlike a maple leaf that turn a brilliant orange-yellow colour in autumn. The tree also has unusual green-grey bark which develops large scales that peel to reveal a creamy-white bark underneath creating an attractive camouflage effect. In spring the tree flowers in spherical clusters on a long drooping stem developing into fruit made up of hundreds of small seed-pods that disperse in the late autumn and winter winds.
Used extensively in urban areas, the London Plane is very tolerant or any soil type and weather as well as acting as a pollutant absorber to some degree. All these characteristics make this roof form tree a popular choice, particularly in London itself where this species makes up over half of the trees in the city, thus earning it the name 'London' Plane.
