Description
Gala apple trees are a well-known and popular variety in supermarkets, highly regarded for their rich, sweet flavour. The small, thin-skinned fruits are perfect for eating straight from the tree in October. Gala apples are not only delicious when fresh but also excellent for pressing into a sweet juice that blends nicely with sharper varieties. Surplus crops can be conveniently stored through to January. This variety is partially self-fertile, but for the heaviest crops, it is best grown alongside another apple variety. If space permits only one tree in your garden, ensure that a neighbouring tree can act as a suitable pollinator.
Royal Gala, a similar variety to Golden Delicious, is distinguished by its superior flavour and attractive colouring. It is a heavy and regular cropper, ideal for those who enjoy a crisp, juicy apple. The picking season for Royal Gala begins in late September, with the fruit capable of being stored until December.
Gala apple trees are medium-to-late season dessert apples, picked in mid-autumn and stored until mid-winter. The apples have a yellow skin, flushed and striped with red, and their juicy, cream flesh offers a rich flavour. In spring, the trees display attractive pink and white blossoms. However, it is important to note that they are not self-fertile.
