Description
Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana) is a true show-stopper when it bursts into bloom each spring. The goblet-shaped flowers in shades of pink, purple and white are just as breathtaking as they are large and fragrant. The blooms which can be up to 10 inches wide, cover the branches before the leaves even emerge, so you get a dazzling display of beauty — and a reminder that spring is just around the corner. The flowers are followed on by lush foliage with golden tones in autumn for additional seasonal interest and the blooms plus the rounded canopy become a haven for pollinators like bees.
Magnolia x soulangeana is best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil that is either slightly acidic or neutral. Water regularly when young but once established it will need less water and is even considered drought tolerant. It's also very hardy even tolerating temperatures down to -15, however it will still benefit from being planted in a sheltered location.
Saucer Magnolia grows about 3-60cm a year and grows upwards with a spreading canopy, eventually reaching around 4-6m in height with a spread of around 5m if left to grow. It's very low maintenance and easy to grow - what's not to love?

Pruning Advice
Prune or trim in mid-summer only if there are any dead, damaged or diseased branches. Otherwise, pruning is rarely required unless overgrown or congested.
Magnolias should always be pruned with care as they can experience stress if too much is cut back at once. If regenerative pruning or reduction in size is needed, stage this over two or three years to avoid stressing the shrub/tree.
