Description

Japanese Camellia (Camellia japonica) is a popular evergreen flowering shrub that like all Camellias has earned the name 'Queen of Winter Flowers' due to its flowering early in spring when the weather is still very cool.

This highly attractive shrub, native to the far east,  boasts deep-green glossy leaves and produces swathes of single blooms in either deep pink or white. The flowers are rose-like and create a spectacular display when little else is in bloom providing an early source of food for pollinators.

Ideal for shadier spots, Camellia japonica will thrive in part and even full shade. Although very hardy, it likes a sheltered location best and grows well in all moist, well-drained soils except for chalky, due to its preference for a slighly acidic soil.

Relatively fast-growing this bushy shrub can achieve heights of 8-12m and a spread of 4-8m, however can be easily kept to a manageable height and spread and once established and shaped, needs very little maintenance or pruning at all. Any shaping of the plant or trimming of wayward shoots should be done after flowering in spring.
