Description
Ilex x altaclerensis 'Golden King' is a golden variegated form of Holly featuring deep-green leaves with a bright-yellow golden margin. The ovate leaves are only slightly spiny and are flattened compared to English Holly so it has a much softer and less prickly aesthetic. Ilex 'Golden King' is a small, bushy evergreen shrub or tree that produces inconspicuous white flowers in spring followed by rust coloured berries in autumn and is a recipient of the RHS 'Award of Garden Merit.
Colourful and with year-round seasonal interest, Ilex 'Golden King' makes an attractive mixed border or specimen shrub. It is fairly slow growing, so whilst it can reach an eventual height and spread of around 4m or more, it will take many years, so it's very easy to keep to a more manageable and compact size.
Ilex 'Golden King' should be planted in a full sun position for the best variegation on the leaves although it will also tolerate some shade. It will grow in any moist, well-drained soil type and is hardy enough for exposed locations, even coastal, making this a versatile shrub suited to most planting positions and locations. .
Pruning and regular maintenance isn't really required for this pretty shrub, simply trim lightly to tidy any dead, diseased or crossing branches at any time.
