Description
Griselinia Hedge Plants Description
With its glossy, apple-green leaves and soft, leathery texture, Griselinia (Griselinia littoralis) is a lush, evergreen hedging plant that brings colour to gardens all year round. Unlike many other evergreens, Griselinia hedging has a softer, more open structure, giving it a slightly relaxed and natural feel while still providing good coverage. In the springtime, a female Griselinia hedge sometimes produces small flowers and non-toxic berries, which are great for attracting pollinators.
Whether it’s used as a formal boundary hedge or a more informal shrub, Griselinia littoralis offers flexibility and easy upkeep. This species is one of the best hedging choices for coastal and exposed gardens, known for its high salt tolerance and ability to withstand strong winds. It thrives in well-drained normal, chalk, or clay soils, prefers full sun, and is drought-tolerant once established — making it a relatively low-maintenance option. With a moderate growth rate of 20-40cm per year, it quickly forms a dense hedge that responds well to occasional trimming.
Our Griselinia hedge plants are available as bare root (from autumn to spring, with pre-orders available in summer) and pot-grown plants all year round for flexible planting.* Learn more with our hedging root types guide. Or, for a colourful, variegated alternative, why not try Griselinia 'Dixon's Cream' Hedge (Griselinia littoralis 'Variegata') — known for its creamy-white edged foliage?

Pruning Advice
Griselinia littoralis grows moderately fast but is fairly low maintenance, with an annual prune being enough to help it keep its shape and size and encourage new growth. This should be done each spring when young, and in spring or summer thereafter. Although, we strongly recommend checking for nesting birds if pruning in springtime.
Giselinia benefits greatly from applying a generous mulch to the base after pruning. If you want to give it another trim to maintain a tidy and more formal look, you can prune it up until early autumn if needed.
Overall, Griselinia is largely quite forgiving and its quick growth rate means it’ll usually bounce back from even severe pruning.
Don't forget however, that you must check the hedge for any potential nest sites prior to commencing any trimming, especially with electric trimmers.
