Acer campestre Hedge Plants Description

Field Maple (Acer campestre) is the only native British maple species, celebrated for its hardiness and vibrant seasonal colour changes. Ideal for creating wildlife-friendly boundaries and decorative hedges, these plants add structure to any garden or outdoor space. In spring, this deciduous species produces a lush green canopy with small, yellow flowers that offer pollen for bees. The leaves then slowly transform into stunning shades of yellow and gold in autumn before dropping in early winter, offering a spectacular display.

As a fast-growing hedge, Acer campestre puts on 30-60cm each year and can be easily maintained at a height of 1-5 metres — though they can reach impressive heights of 20 metres at full maturity. This provides excellent privacy and sound insulation. Its small leaves are instantly recognisable with their five rounded lobes, producing dense foliage that makes Field Maple an excellent choice for boundary screening. Its distinctive winged seeds also provide a valuable food source for birds while adding visual interest during the dormant period.

Field Maple thrives in almost any soil type, from light sand to heavy clay, and is best planted in full sun and tolerant of partial shade, making it a versatile choice for trickier garden spots. Bare-root Acer campestre hedge plants are available from late November to March, while pot-grown varieties can be found year-round, ensuring there’s an option to suit all planting schedules.

Field Maple (Acer campestre) plants are a wonderful addition to any garden. Featuring distinctive 5-lobed leaves, Acer campestre brings a colourful display to its surroundings with reddish-green leaves in spring and summer, turning a rich golden yellow shade in autumn.

During spring Field Maple hedge plants bloom with small yellow-green flowers which blossom at the same time its new distinctive leaves open up. A superb hedge plant for wildlife, the flowers of the Acer campestre provide pollen for bees while the small winged 'helicopter' fruits during autumn are popular among smaller mammals.

Suitable for most soil types, Acer campestre is best planted in full sun or partial shade (full shade is not recommended). Field Maple plants are fast growing, at a rate of 30-60cm per year and are easy to maintain at 1m-5m height - while they can reach up to 20 metres height at full maturity.

An easy to maintain and resilient hedge plant, Field Maple hedge is an excellent choice whether planted as a single species or combined with other native hedge plants.

Choose Field Maple Hedge root types

What are root types?
x

Root types explained.

  • Bare root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
