Description
For a hint of the tropics in your garden then consider Fatsia japonica, common name Japanese Aralia. It has large, palmate, glossy green leaves on long arching stems and is a recipient of both the RHS Award of Garden Merit and Plants for Pollinators. A popular shrub, Fatsia japonica also produces small, white, spherical flowers on branching stems in the autumn followed by round black fruits for additional seasonal interest. The flowers are loved by pollinating insects and the birds equally love the juicy berries.
Fatsia japonica is a medium-sized evergreen shrub with a spreading habit. It prefers sunny or partially shaded conditions in a sheltered location but can tolerate shade to a degree. Plant in moist, well-drained soil and protect from hard frosts and cold drying winds in winter.
Fatsia japonica grows to around 3-4 m at maturity and looks fantastic in any garden. However, to enhance the tropical look of Fatsia japonica, consider planting it alongside other exotic species such as bamboo or large grasses. Alternatively, use as a specimen plant in its own corner of the garden where it can impress all by itself!
Fatsia japonica is exceptionally low maintenance and can simply be left to grow. If needed however, trim any shoots that affect the symmetry of the plant in mid-late spring.
