Taxus baccata Hedge Plants Description

English Yew, or Taxus baccata, is a native choice for both traditional and contemporary garden designs, chosen for its characteristic dense, dark green foliage that keeps its colour all year round. This evergreen hedge offers more than just privacy; it forms a thick, natural barrier against external noise, wind, and pollution that’s perfect for formal garden settings or spaces. As well as looking stunning as a boundary hedge, Taxus baccata can be used to create magnificent topiary shapes, like topiary balls, cones, and pyramids.

Yew hedges are popular for their slow-to-average growth rate, as they typically gain between 20-40 cm per year, which makes them easy to shape and keep at your desired height. As a conifer hedge, Taxus baccata boasts vivid green foliage in spring, contrasting the darker mature leaves of last season’s growth. In autumn, female yew hedge plants produce small, red berries that are a hit with birds, though it's worth noting that the seeds within are toxic to humans, pets, and livestock.

English Yew is a classic British hedge species native to the UK. It is incredibly versatile, thriving in a variety of soil types — though it prefers well-drained alkaline conditions. It's also shade-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for darker corners of your garden. Whether planted as a standalone feature or as part of a larger hedgerow, Taxus baccata is a reliable choice for adding structure and elegance to your outdoor space.

Whatever your outdoor space requirements, you’ll find a variety of English Yew hedging to suit your needs. Here at Hedges Direct, you can find bare-root and root ball Yew plants from October/November to March/April, or pot-grown and instant hedging formats year-round to meet your planting preferences.*

What are root types?

Root types explained.

  • Bare root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
