English Oak Hedge Plants Description
The classic English Oak is a hugely popular, deciduous, native species. It features multi-lobed deep green leaves on short stems which grow in clusters on its gently twisting branches. It provides rich autumn colour when its dark green foliage turns yellow and burnt orange and begins to fall to the ground.
Quercus robur trees are also a food source and natural habitat to more species of British wildlife than an other native tree, especially when acorn production begins. Even the fallen leaves, when breaking down into leaf mould, support a myriad of insect and fungi species whilst the acorns provide food for woodland mammals such as deer, squirrels and even the oocasional badger!
English Oaks have a spreading form and would be expected to reach a height and spread of 10 x 6m over 20 years unless specifically grown as a hedge. English Oak will grow well in all but the wettest of soils, even being lime tolerant, and will grow in most locations, sheltered or exposed, except deep shade. As a tree it can eventually reach up to 40 metres in height, but this can take between 20 and 50 years to achieve. English Oak plants are however perfect for hedging as they produce tap roots early in life, which means they do not steal moisture and nutrients from the surrounding plants.
Prices shown are the price per plant. Recommended planting densities are shown but this is very much a matter of choice and you can increase or reduce the density depending on your level of patience. See also our Advice section on Planting Density.
