Dog Rose Hedge Plants Description

Rosa canina, or ‘Dog Rose’ as it’s more commonly known, is a classic addition to any garden — recognisable for its simple flowers and jagged, nettle-like foliage. This native British species is a popular choice for patio shrubs, but also makes a great informal hedge. Rosa canina is more than just a visual treat, creating a haven for wildlife that attracts bees and butterflies to its delicate pink and white blooms during the summer months.

Reaching heights of up to 3 meters when fully mature and putting on 40-60cm each year, Dog Rose quickly forms a dense, sprawling hedge — perfect for creating natural boundaries along the edge of your property. In autumn, it produces bright red rosehips, which are not only eye-catching but also rich in vitamin C and great for making your own syrups and jellies.

Despite its fast growth rate, Dog Rose hedging is surprisingly low-maintenance and thrives in most well-drained, moist soil conditions. Although these hedges can tolerate partially-shaded areas, they are happiest in a spot with full sun. They’re hardy shrubs that can withstand strong winds and are also suitable for coastal gardens, while their ability to spread makes them ideal for larger spaces that need coverage.

Pot-grown Rosa canina hedge plants can be purchased all year round, with bare-root hedging plants available from November to mid-to-late May, weather dependent.*

*Bare-root and root-ball stock are subject to availability and may change, but are generally available from autumn through to spring.

Dog Rose Hedge Plants Description Although Dog Rose is commonly grown as a beautiful, informal garden shrub, it also makes an excellent hedge to help to protect against intruders as its hooked thorns make it an impenetrable barrier whether it's planted on its own or as part of a mixed native hedge. Due to its density, Dog Rose also makes a wonderful shelter for wildlife, who are quite partial to its vitamin C-rich fruits, which are also edible for humans. It is from these shiny, red rose hips, which adorn the plant in autumn, that the popular 'Rosehip Oil' is derived. Dog Rose is a very fast-growing shrub, achieving up to 40-60cm growth per year, and grows well in any drained, moist soil. Although it can be grown in partially shaded areas, low-maintenance Rosa canina is happiest in a sunny spot. It is a hardy shrub that can readily withstand strong winds and will also grow happily near the coast making this a good choice of shrub in more exposed coastal locations. Hedges Direct offers a wide range of hardy plants that can thrive in extreme weather conditions. Rosa canina hedge plants are available all year round as cell grown or pot grown plants, with the bare root hedging plants only available from November to mid/late May, weather dependent. As one of our UK native species, Dog Rose is also included in our Mixed Native Hedging Packs.

Choose Dog Rose Hedge root types

What are root types?
x

Root types explained.

  • Bare root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
