Description

Chaenomeles x superba 'Crimson & Gold' is also known as Japanese Quince 'Crimson and Gold'. Unusually, this spiny, deciduous shrub bears its plentiful flowers in the spring on the bare, thorny branches before the small, glossy leaves emerge, bringing early vibrant colour to the garden.

The flowers are crimson, five-petalled and cup-shaped with golden-yellow anthers. Once the flowers are spent they are followed on by the yellow-green, aromatic fruit, ensuring a colourful display for some months. The fruit produced is edible when cooked.

Chaenomeles x superba 'Crimson & Gold' has a spreading growth habit and is therefore ideal as a climbing, trained plant. It will grow and fruit best in full sun but will also tolerate partial shade well. Due to its hardiness it will grow in either a sheltered or exposed location. It is suited to all soil types but prefers moist and well-drained soil.
