Description
Buddleia davidii 'Black Knight', commonly known as Butterfly Bush 'Black Knight', is a UK garden favourite and recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. This deciduous, vigorous shrub has deep purple-violet, sweetly scented, large flower spikes which are a magnet for butterflies and other pollinators. Its long, lance-like green leaves have paler undersides and the shrub has an overall softly arching habit.
Buddleja 'Black Knight' flowers from July to September, providing an extended summer blooming season and food for insects later into the year and in autumn the leaves become golden-yellow before falling.
A vigorous shrub with a bushy habit, Buddleja 'Black Knight' is fast growing at around 40cm a year. If left to grow, it can reach heights of 10ft tall and equally wide (although it can be maintained at a smaller size quite easily) so will benefit from a decent amount of space in a sunny bed or border in which to thrive.
Buddleja 'Black Knight' is a colourful and fragrant plant that is both impressive and eye-catching. It will thrive in sunnier positions, but will also tolerate partial shade and will grow in any fertile soil as long as it is moist and well-drained.
We recommend deadheading the flowers on your Buddleja 'Black Knight' once spent to encourage more blooms. A hard prune around March, back to around 3 or 4 buds will ensure healthy growth and good flower production come the summer.

Deadhead spent blooms in summer to encourage further flower production. Hard prune the plant in March back to three or four buds. This will encourage healthy growth and abundant flower production in the summer.
