Description
Bergenia cordifolia is also known by the common name Elephant's Ears, so named for the large, leathery leaves this clump-forming perennial produces. This attractive ground cover plant throws up sturdy red-tinged, erect stems in spring which then bear clusters of pretty mid-pink flowers, which hover over the foliage. In autumn, the large leaves take on a purple-bronze hue for further seasonal interest.
An evergreen, low maintenance plant, Bergenia cordifolia will grow in both sun and shade and in most soils, making this an exceptionally versatile plant. Â It has therefore received the Award of Garden Merit from the RHS for its versatility and hardiness to both frost and drought. It is ideal for front of border and can even be grown in gravel.
Bergenia cordifolia will grow to around 50cm in height and up to 1m spread.
