Description
The Ben Nevis blackcurrant, a mid to late-season variety developed by the Scottish Crop Research Institute, is known for its heavy yields and excellent fruit quality. This deciduous shrub produces large, well-flavoured blackcurrants from mid to late July. The bushes are vigorous, tall, and upright, making them easier to pick compared to other varieties. They flower two days before the Ben Lomond but have a similar cropping time. Although the weight of the crop is slightly less than Ben Lomond, the ease of harvesting due to the bush's growth habit is a significant advantage.
The blackcurrants are self-fertile and produce inconspicuous yellow-green flowers in spring. The fruits are very large, ripening evenly on short strigs, and are ideal for various purposes due to their excellent flavour. The Ben Nevis variety also boasts good resistance to mildew and frost, ensuring reliable production even in challenging conditions.
These multi-stemmed bushes fruit on both old and new wood, with the latter carrying the best crops. As such, cultivation practices should focus on feeding and pruning to continually renew the stems, ensuring optimal yield and fruit quality. Overall, the Ben Nevis blackcurrant is an excellent choice for those seeking a robust, easy-to-pick variety with superior fruit quality.
